Day Thirty-Seven - The Stories Weren’t Adding Up

I knew something was wrong. We weren’t even sleeping in the same bed anymore, and I could feel the distance between us.

Then COVID hit, and so much happened at once.

While I wasn’t going down to South Carolina, a pipe burst at the house and caused serious damage. Insurance money eventually came through, and he would go down to meet with contractors and oversee the repairs.

But when I finally went back, there was still mold in the kitchen, and the work hadn’t been finished properly.

We had a huge fight. I wanted to know what had happened to the insurance money and why the house still wasn’t fixed.

He stayed down there and caught COVID. He was there for weeks, and he became so sick that I was afraid I might lose him.

When he finally came home, I put yellow ribbons on the tree. I was relieved he was alive and coming back to us.

Even with everything going wrong, I still cared.

About a month later, I suggested a trip to Florida. I thought a little break might do us good.

He said, “You go with the kids.”

My son had installed a Ring camera, and apparently, he didn’t realize it was recording. While we were away, it showed him coming home at four or five in the morning—all dressed up.

When I asked him about it, he said he had been on emergency jobs.

But what I was seeing didn’t match what he was telling me.

After everything—the distance, the problems at the house, the arguments, and now these late nights—I couldn’t keep brushing my questions aside.

I wanted to believe my husband. But I also needed to stop ignoring what was right in front of me.

To be continued…
