Day Thirty-Eight - From Panic to Power
I bought a recorder and put it in the truck I had paid for—the one he drove. Then life got busy, and I almost forgot it was there. Weeks passed.
One night, around eleven, a friend messaged me.
“Are you still with him? Have you seen his posts—all the tables he’s selling and the people he’s talking to?”
I told her I didn’t look at that stuff.
Then she said something that stayed with me.
“Marcie, remember who you are. You started this business in the Bronx by yourself. Wake up. Don’t let anybody take advantage of you.”
After we finished talking, I lay down. He was asleep on the couch.
My mother came to me in a dream.
“Get up. Get up.”
I went downstairs, and the keys were on the table. I grabbed them, opened the truck, and took out the recorder. Then I went into my office and plugged it in.
What I heard made me sick to my stomach.
I was devastated. Someone I had loved, cared for, and helped build a better life had betrayed me. It felt like he had an entirely separate life.
You see stories like that on television. You never imagine sitting in your own office, discovering you’re living one.
I thought about everything I had given and all the times I had believed things would get better.
This was it. My breaking point.
I didn’t want another explanation. I didn’t want another promise or another chance to be talked into staying.
I wanted him gone.
It hurt more than I can explain. But I knew I was done.
My friend had told me to remember who I was. That night, I knew I had to stand up for that woman again.
