Day Twenty-Eight - A New Dream on the Corner
I was learning how to live with the pain in my body, but inside my own home, things weren’t going the way I had hoped.
See, I believed in marriage. Moving in together had made sense at the time, but I wanted that commitment. Sometimes you discover that being together doesn’t mean you both want the same future.
I found myself not wanting to be home. I needed something to do with that extra time—something of my own to look forward to.
Then one day, while walking to my office on Tremont Avenue, I noticed a store on the corner.
I stopped and looked at it. Right near my house. Right near my office. And my mind started going.
“What a perfect spot for bagels and Italian ices.”
There I was again, seeing a possibility and wanting to find out what I could do with it.
I put in an offer, and I got the store! I named it Santino’s.
And it was a hit. Everybody loved it. It became a great little hangout, and it felt amazing to see people enjoying something I had created.
We served bagels and eggs in the morning and Italian ices for a sweet treat. In the winter, we turned it into a soup house. We found ways to keep it going through the seasons.
After work, I would head over to Santino’s and stay until closing. My days were full, and things were looking good.
Opening that store didn’t take away my physical pain or solve what was happening at home. But it gave me something to be excited about again.
Sometimes you can be hurting in one part of your life and still find joy in another. Santino’s became one of those places for me.
