Day Thirty-Three - The House Under the Stars
Time was getting short. My house had a buyer, and I still hadn’t found our next home.
My real estate agent took me to a house in Rye. It seemed perfect at first, but the basement ceiling was low, and the space wasn’t right for what I wanted for my boys.
Then I noticed some open-house cards on a table. One picture caught my eye.
“Where is this house?” I asked.
“Bedford Hills.”
I looked at my agent. “Where’s that?”
He offered to take me. The woman explained that her husband had built the house for her, but they couldn’t move there because their daughter needed a special school.
So off we went.
The drive felt so long. I remember saying, “Where are we going? Maybe we should turn back!”
But then we arrived.
The house was about 80 percent finished. It was gorgeous. And when I stepped onto the deck, it was almost dark. I looked up, and there were stars everywhere.
It was one of the most beautiful sights I had ever seen. This felt like my dream house.
But it cost much more than I thought I could afford.
There were already offers, and an open house was planned for Sunday. I was told that if I wanted to make an offer, I needed to do it by the next day—and my deposit wouldn’t be refundable if I couldn’t get the mortgage.
It was a huge decision.
They gave me the code to return, so I went home, gathered my boys, and said, “Please come with me. We have to make a decision.”
One of my sons told me, “Mom, this is really far from the Bronx. But if this is what you want, go for it.”
The next morning, I put down a $50,000 deposit.
A few days later, they accepted my offer.
There was still more to do, but we were one big step closer. That beautiful house in Bedford Hills was going to be our home.
